Visiting Thailand

Ang Thong

Ang Thong Hotels

Get a taste of the real Thailand, far away from the tourist trail, yet only a couple of hours drive from Bangkok. Traversed by the Chao Phraya and Noi Rivers, the small province of Ang Thong is awash with golden rice fields, majestic shrines and temples, and villages famous for their traditional handicrafts.

More than 200 magnificent temples are scattered throughout Ang Thong. Some date back to the ancient Ayutthaya period, including Wat Phohom, Wat Saket, Wat Mathurotsatiyaram, Wat Ratchapaksi and Wat Khun Inthra Pramun – home to one of the largest reclining Buddhas in Thailand. Admire the intricate mural paintings and wooden carvings of temples like Wat Khian. Or discover the wild beauty of the fish sanctuary at Wat Khoi, on the banks of the Noi River, or Wat Riowa, where hundreds of rare and native birds dwell within.

The villagers of Ang Thong are renowned craftspeople, and tourists can visit local homes to see their skills in action. Explore the villages of Samko, Pho Thong and Pa Mok districts, Ban Bang Chao Cho and Ban Bang Phae to see traditional bamboo baskets, wickerware, intricate dolls, traditional drums and Thai-style house parts exquisitely handmade.

Don’t miss one of the many colourful events that take place in Ang Thong. See the traditional longboat races held in March and October. Or experience the energy and atmosphere of festivals like the City of Rice and Water Bowl Fair in February or the Dragon Parade in December.
